Patching Clients and Restart Settings

SCCM 2007 R3. Small environment with about 50 servers and some 100 clients (there are other clients in a separate forest, which we do not control).

The basic question is how do others handle client restart settings?

Managing software server updates works well. We have defined a maintenance window (Modify Collection Settings) 18:00–23:59 on Friday. Software update schedule is set to “As soon as possible” and a deadline referring to Friday 18:00. System restart inside the maintenance window in the Server deployment template is not suppressed. The servers get their updates and are restarted.

However, on the client side this does not work too well. The settings are similar with a defined maintenance window: every day 17:00–23:59. The problem is that about some 30-40 percent of the machines are turned either off or are in power save mode (we have enabled wake-on-LAN; not sure if it works in a reliable way). The result is that those clients are not restarted.

We have tried to allow for restarts during business hours. However, this has not been very popular, and people complained about losing work and being interrupted.

Any recommendation about how to handle these client software updates would be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
